The Four Gifts of Three Wise Men

"And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh." (Matthew 2:11)

As we celebrate God's great gift to mankind, most of us want to give something back, but what? This year our family bought a gift for an inmate's child and will give some money to missions, but personally, I want to do more. I want to give Jesus the fourth gift the wise men brought to Him.

Guided by a brilliant start, three wise men brought four gifts to give to our Lord. Recognizing He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, they brought him gold-a gift fit for a king.

They also gave Him Frankincense, the scent that the priests burned in the temple as they offered sacrifices to God. Frankincense was a perfect gift for a perfect Priest.

The third gift they brought was an unusual gift for a baby shower-myrrh. Myrrh was the substance the ancients used to embalm their dead. Not exactly an appropriate Baby Shower gift, but in this case, it communicated a great theological truth. The gift of Myrrh reminds us that Jesus was born to die. The little child wrapped in warm clothing laying in a rough-hewn feed trough would one day hang from a rugged cross and wear the sins of the world. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16 )

What I'm referring to as the fourth gift of the wise men, was actually the first thing they gave Him-their worship. This Christmas, I pray the I might be able to truly worship Him, as the wise men did, and that you will be able to too.
