9-11 Christmas
I can't believe Christmas is over already. Soon, we'll put the decorations
away, put the toys in the toy box, the new clothes in the closet, pay off
the bills and everything will be back to normal again.
As much as I want to believe the last phrase in the previous sentence,
I really can't. I don't know if life will ever be the same again.
Christmas activities provided a much needed respite from the 24-hour
news channel's constant reminder that we were attacked and that we're at
war. It was nice to have Jimmy Stewart remind us again that this really
is "A Wonderful Life," even as we lament the evil in the world. The traditions
and familiar activities made life seem normal, if but for a season.
Our generations will never forget this year-it will shape the rest of
our lives. As December 7, 1941 shaped the "Greatest Generation" that fought
WWII, so will September 11, 2001 shape this one. With the same resolve
of those who fought "the war to end all wars," our President has pledged
to "stamp out terrorism." Both noble endeavors. Both impossible.
Jesus said, "And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be
frightened; those things must take place; but that is not yet the end."
(Mark 13:7 NASB) This side of Glory, there will be wars and terror. But
the day is coming when that will end.
That bright and glorious day. The trumpet will sound, the sky will part,
and the Lord will return. Then and only then will Peace reign. Until then,
we have to get used to the fact that war and strife is normal. Today I
pray for life to get to abnormal soon.
"The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie
down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together;
and a little child shall lead them." (Isaiah 11:6 KJV)
