QUOTATIONS

Can you use a great quotation to punch a point? The Quotation Center website has over 13,000 quotations in their searchable data base. Bartlett's Familiar Quotations is also online. You can search their massive database or read the quotations by primary authors.

HISTORY

Spice up your historical illustrations with those details that may have slipped your mind. Read biographical information on key figures in American history and the inaugural speeches of the Presidents of the United States. The ANYDAY Today-in-History PAGE of SCOPE SYSTEMS website is a searchable database that shows the significant historical events for any day of the year. For information on the Pulitzer Prize winners for the past 80 years, visit The Pulitzer Prizes website.

POLLS

Journalists often use polling data to illustrate their points, now preachers can have access to the same information. The Roper Center for Public Opinion website has U.S. public opinion data covering a quarter of a million questions that cover 1935 to today. The Gallup Organization website archives public opinion data going back to 1935. You can also read the results to their latest polls.

STATISTICS

What percentage of Americans believe that Jesus sinned during His lifetime? Visit Harper's Index to find the answer to that and other unusual statistical questions. The answer? 42%. To discover social trends and statistics, visit Statistical Abstract of the U.S. Topics range from hate crimes to consumer finance. The web site is maintained by the U. S. Census Bureau.

Strange News

Current events make powerful illustrations. Beyond the mainstream news sources, the Internet has web sites that specialize in humorous stories and strange news. Some of the web sites offer free email subscriptions to their visitors. Don't assume that every site on the net is true. Read the story of the evolution of the Cleaner Who Polishes off Patients before you decide to believe everything you read. Here are a few of my favorite "strange news" sources.

  • Wacky Newz contains concise, news stories from around the world.
  • Weirdnuz is a synopses of bizarre news stories found in print media. Syndicated column by Chuck Shepherd is carried in over 200 newspapers. You can read archived stories.
  • Yahoo! News Human Interest Oddly Enough website has summaries of current news that link to detailed stories.
  • AM News Abuse offers summaries of strange news from around the world.
  • Darwin Awards website reports on strange ways that people die. It contains more humor than morbidity.
  • Bizarre News has legends, fictionalized, and tabloid-type news items.
  • News of the Ridiculous and the Sublime is a collection of news with a weird slant, gathered from worldwide, free newspapers.
  • This is True reports on true, but bizarre news items from the world-wide print media by Colorado humorist Randy Cassingham.
